Cities have been traditionally seen as the breeding grounds for citizenship, the latter usually framed in terms of dwellers having specific rights, duties, some sort of political participation and frequent interactions with each other. Yet, urbanization can also present many challenges that further disenfranchise and marginalize residents. As the most urbanized region in the world, Latin American cities highlight both of these sceneries. Industrialization and neoliberal economic policies led to the continentââ¬â¢s rapid urbanization, introducing large developments but also deeply segregated urban centers, characterised by strong tensions between their formal and informal dimensions. Latin American leadersââ¬â¢ efforts to tackle this issue have presented both setbacks and opportunities to transform the city into a more integrated space, and set the path to recognize every dwellersââ¬â¢ right to the city: to be in it, to enjoy it, and to build it. Social differentiation and separation have been frequent characteristics of Latin American cities, in both physical, psychological and cultural terms. The death penalty also known as capital punishment is when the government decides whether or not to kill a person depending on their crime. If itââ¬â¢s a petty crime you wonââ¬â¢t be considered for death penalty but when you commit a heinous crime such as mass murder or rape and murder the courts may rule for you to get the death penalty. When the death penalty became popular in America, many people were executed for petty crimes such as stealing, trading with natives or even killing chickens. Was a military struggle fought principally in Kuwait and Iraq during January and February 1991. The crisis began in August 1990, when Iraq, led by President Saddam Hussein, invaded and annexed Kuwait. Between August and November the United Nations Security Council passed a series of resolutions that culminated in the demand that Iraq withdraw unconditionally from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. By that time, some 500,000 allied ground, air, and naval forces?chiefly from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Great Britain, Egypt, Syria, and France?were arrayed against an Iraqi army estimated at that time to number 540,000. Under the command of U.S. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the multinational coalition began intensive aerial bombardment of military targets in Iraq and Kuwait within 24 hours after the UN deadline expired, using advanced weaponry such as laser-guided bombs and cruise missiles, as well as conventional weapons. After establishing air superiority, coalition forces disabled Iraq's command and control centers, especially in Baghdad and Al Basrah of transport and communication between Baghdad and the troops in the field; and relentlessly attacked Iraq's infantry, which was dug in along the Saudi-Kuwaiti border, and the 125,000-man Republican Guard in southeastern Iraq and northern Kuwait. Some Iraqi aircraft were shot down; many more were bombed in shelters or fled to Iran. Iraq retaliated by using mobile launchers to fire Scud missiles at Saudi Arabia and Israel, a noncombatant; the U.S. countered this threat with patriot antimissile missiles. In mid-February, with its military and civilian casualties rapidly mounting, Iraq signaled its willingness to withdraw from Kuwait. A series of conditional Iraqi offers, mediated by the Soviet Union, were rejected by the coalition. Instead, allied forces began a coordinated air-land offensive, breaching Iraq's main line of defense at the Saudi-Kuwaiti border and swiftly advancing through southern Iraq to outflank the main Iraqi force and cut off the Republican Guard's principal avenue of retreat. Within 100 hours, the city of Kuwait had been liberated, and ten of thousands of Iraqi troops had deserted, surrendered, or been captured or killed. Coalition combat losses were astonishingly light: as of February 28, when offensive operations were suspended, only 149 allied troops had been killed and 513 wounded. Damage to Kuwait was extensive, however, as retreating Iraqi forces looted the capital and set fire to most of Kuwait's oil wells. Iraqi representatives accepted allied terms for a provisional truce on March 3 and a permanent cease-fire on April 6. Iraq agreed to pay reparations to Kuwait, reveal the location and extent of its stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and eliminate its weapons of mass destruction. Subsequently, however, UN inspectors complained that the Baghdad government was frustrating their attempts to monitor Iraqi compliance. The war in the Persian Gulf was a war of religios fervor, and cruel leadership. Desert Storm was the same type of war that had occured in this area for many years except for one fact. In Operation Desert Storm, sophisticated technology was used to end the war in a quick and timely manner. In 1979 Saddam Hussien took control of Iraq, and immediatly set the tone for his rule by killing 21 of his cabinet members. He wanted to make his country whole once again so in 1990 he invaded Kuwait and in less than 4 hours he had taken Kuwait and controlled 24% of the worlds oi l supplies. It seemed as if his next target was Saudi Arabia. This was where the United States entered after a call for protection by Saudi Arabia. The United States set a deadline, January 15, 1991 for all Iraq forces to be out of Kuwait, but Saddam ignored the deadline. That triggered Desert Shield, or the build-up of troops in the region and eventually lead to Desert Storm, a all-out attack to free Kuwait. He wanted to give up when he took a tumble and skidded across the sidewalk. But while I bandaged up his knees with Batman band-aids, I convinced him to give it another try. I told him to think about how he would be able to bike all around the neighborhood exploring. Now I smile whenever I see him zooming down our street- wearing his helmet, of course! See the difference? Wouldnââ¬â¢t you rather read the second one? Think how boring this angel statue would be if it was just kind of vaguely chiseled out of the rock. #7: Be Genuine Itââ¬â¢s important to get beyond the superficial in your personal statement. You should be writing about something thatââ¬â¢s genuinely important or significant to you, so try to get beyond the surface. Instead of writing vague platitudes about how you really like the violin but itââ¬â¢s hard, really get at the meat: did you ever think about quitting? Whatââ¬â¢s frustrated you the most? What really keeps you going? This means you shouldnââ¬â¢t try to write about things where itââ¬â¢s too painful to be honest. So if your parents got a divorce last year, it may be too raw to write about, which is perfectly fine. If, however, they got divorced when you were 5 and you can honestly reflect on how it changed your life, go for it. Of course, you want to be honest in a reasonable and appropriate way. If you overshare, it will make it seem like you have bad judgment or donââ¬â¢t understand social norms- not good impressions to give the admissions committee. So probably donââ¬â¢t write about how much you despise your mother and think she is evil since she had an affair with your school librarian. Itââ¬â¢s fine to feel how you feel, but there are some things that are a little too charged to write in your college essay. #8: Be Unique, but Not Bizarre You definitely want your writing to set you apart- but you want it to set you apart in a good way. This means you want high-quality writing about unique experiences and qualities you bring to the table that arenââ¬â¢t covered elsewhere in your application. This does not mean you should get really avant-garde with your essay formatting. Donââ¬â¢t send in a piece of art instead of an essay, or make a video, or write a poem instead of an essay, unless those things are explicitly allowed. Similarly, while your essay doesnââ¬â¢t have to be 100% deadly serious in tone, you should be careful with humor. This doesnââ¬â¢t mean absolutely no jokes or tongue-in-cheek moments or that your essay should read like an 18th-century book of sermons. But if your essay relies too much on humor, youââ¬â¢ve got a lot riding on whether or not the person reading your essay ââ¬Å"getsâ⬠it. They may well be annoyed. So deploy humor carefully and selectively. Sermons not necessary. #9: Avoid Cliches and Platitudes The more cliches you use in your writing, the more boring and less insightful your essay will be. Cliches are phrases that are so overused that they are essentially meaningless, and they are likely to make any reader roll their eyes. Phrases like ââ¬Å"a dime a dozen,â⬠ââ¬Å"outside the box,â⬠ââ¬Å"cold as ice,â⬠ââ¬Å"dirt cheap,â⬠ââ¬Å"flash in the pan,â⬠and so on are frequently deployed in conversation because they convey a common idea quickly. But you donââ¬â¢t want your essay to be common, so avoid cliches. Try to think about how you can communicate the same idea in a more specific and interesting way. Hereââ¬â¢s a list of over 600 cliches. But for the most part, you wonââ¬â¢t need a list; youââ¬â¢ll know something is a cliche because you will have heard it a million times already. You should also avoid platitudes or sweeping generalizations about life. These are statements that are so broad and far-reaching as to be both obvious and completely uninsightful. So avoid making statements like ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s how I learned that hard work pays off,â⬠or ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ in team.â⬠You may think you sound sage or wise, but the truth is, platitudes are going to sound immature and poorly-formed to the reader. Similarly, donââ¬â¢t say things that sound like they could come from an inspirational quote account on Instagram. (See, ahem, ââ¬Å"You miss 100% of the shots you never take,â⬠ââ¬Å"Shoot for the moon,â⬠and so on.) How do you avoid the platitude problem? Try to keep what youââ¬â¢re saying specific to you. So instead of saying ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s how I learned that hard work pays off,â⬠try, ââ¬Å"This experience helped me to realize that when I put concentrated effort into something thatââ¬â¢s important to me, I can accomplish it even when there are roadblocks.â⬠Keep the focus on what you can and will do in your own life. Avoid saying anything like this at all costs. 2 Tips for Editing Your College Essay You may think that once youââ¬â¢ve gotten a draft done that youââ¬â¢re good to go. Not so! Comparative Analysis - Essay Example The female heroines are placed into situations in which love is not easy, nor it is the primary goal of these women, but it is an inevitable outcome to the events that occur. The novels Jane Eyre, an Autobiography and Emma explore the topic of love through heroines which have no interest in finding love, but whose destinies are on a trajectory towards that end. The story of Jane Eyre, an Autobiography, written by Charlotte Bronte, is a tragedy, the life of Jane filled with painful moments that seem to plague her life. As a child she is orphaned and sent to live with relatives who treat her poorly. She attends a school where cruelty is the main interaction with adults. Once she finds a position, the strangeness of the house is balanced against the love that she finds there, only to find out that the subject of her love is married to another. Love is denied to Jane throughout the novel, her life defined by a resignation to this fact. It is a surprise when she finds love, but her principles keep her from that love until such time as the circumstances around it become appropriate. A word that defines the nature of Jane is dignity, although much of the time those around her are working hard to deny her that quality. The story of Emma written by Jane Austen is a comedy which is in high contrast to the gothic, dark environment of Jane Eyre, an Autobiography. Where Jane is reserved and has had a difficult life financially, Emma has no financial worries and explores her world without much caution. Emma is an extrovert who tries to manipulate her environment with a blind belief that she knows what is best for everyone who comes into her life. The conflict comes as it appears that she does not know what is best for everyone else, not even herself. The novel is written from the perspective of Emmaââ¬â¢s world view, the third person narration often sounding much more like it is coming from Emmaââ¬â¢s thoughts.
